What It Measures
The number and location of military personnel deployed abroad, including permanent bases, peacekeeping missions, and temporary deployments.
Why It Matters
Deployments reveal global military presence, alliance commitments, and power projection capabilities. Large deployments indicate superpower status (US), regional influence, or peacekeeping contributions.
How to Interpret
US has ~230,000 permanently deployed overseas (bases in Europe, Asia, Middle East). Other countries deploy for UN peacekeeping, anti-piracy, or military assistance. No deployments suggests regional focus or limited capability.
Limitations
Data reflects 2020 deployments and may not capture recent withdrawals (Afghanistan) or new missions. Does not include covert operations, special forces, or military advisors.
