Unit

Data Source
World Bank (SIPRI Military Expenditure Database)

What It Measures

Total government spending on defense and military forces in current US dollars, including personnel, operations, procurement, R&D, and military aid.

Why It Matters

Absolute military spending indicates a country's defense investment and economic capacity to sustain military forces. High spending may reflect security concerns, global commitments, or arms industry support.

How to Interpret

Compare to GDP (% GDP metric) for relative burden. Top spenders (US, China, Russia) have global power projection. Regional leaders may maintain high spending due to conflicts or alliances.

Limitations

Current USD values are not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power. Exchange rate fluctuations affect comparisons. Does not include indirect military costs (veterans' benefits, debt servicing).
