What It Measures

The organizational structure of a country's armed forces, including branches (army, navy, air force, marines, coast guard) and internal security forces.

Why It Matters

Understanding force structure reveals defense priorities, capabilities, and institutional arrangements. It shows whether a country emphasizes land, sea, or air power, and how civilian security is organized.

How to Interpret

Countries with extensive military branches typically have global power projection capabilities or face significant security threats. The presence of separate internal security forces may indicate concerns about domestic stability.

Limitations

Data reflects 2020 structure and may not capture recent reorganizations. Does not indicate force readiness, training quality, or combat effectiveness.
