What It Measures
The total number of active-duty military personnel and breakdown by service branch (army, navy, air force, marines, coast guard).
Why It Matters
Personnel strength is a key indicator of military capacity and defense investment. Large standing armies require significant resources and reflect strategic priorities or perceived threats.
How to Interpret
Personnel numbers should be considered relative to population size and GDP. A country with 500,000 troops may be highly militarized (small population) or moderately defended (large population).
Limitations
Numbers reflect active duty personnel only, excluding reserves, paramilitary, and contractors. Does not account for force modernization, technology, or effectiveness.
