How It's Calculated

Based on census ethnicity questions, administrative records, or anthropological surveys. Aggregated from CIA World Factbook 2020 edition. Ethnic classification varies widely by country - some use race (USA: White, Black, Asian), ancestry (European countries), language (Belgium: Flemish, Walloon), or indigenous status. Percentages reflect self-identified ethnic identity from most recent census.

Why It Matters

Ethnic composition reveals diversity, potential for ethnic conflict, and historical migration or colonization patterns. It shapes political representation, language policy, affirmative action programs, and minority rights. Ethnic diversity can be a source of cultural richness or social tension, depending on inclusive governance and historical grievances. Understanding ethnic composition is essential for analyzing inequality, discrimination, conflict risk, and census/electoral disputes.

Understanding the Values

Ethnic Homogeneity: > 90% single group (Japan 98%, South Korea 96%) Ethnic Majority: 70-90% dominant group (China 92% Han, France 85% French) Ethnic Plurality: 50-70% largest group (USA 60% White, Brazil 47% mixed race) Ethnic Diversity: No single group > 50% (Nigeria, India, Indonesia - hundreds of ethnic groups) Note: Ethnic diversity does not predict conflict; inclusive institutions and power-sharing arrangements are key. Caution: Ethnic census data can be politicized, manipulated, or used to incite discrimination.

Data Quality & Coverage

Coverage: 233 countries (CIA Factbook) Update frequency: Static (2020 edition) - based on most recent census (often 5-20 years old) Source: CIA World Factbook 2020 Limitations: Ethnicity is socially constructed and definitions vary. Some countries prohibit ethnic census questions (France). Mixed ethnicity individuals may be classified inconsistently. Indigenous groups often undercounted. Political regimes may suppress or exaggerate minority percentages. Does not measure ethnic segregation, inequality, or inter-ethnic relations.
