How It's Calculated
Total number of passengers carried on domestic and international flights by air carriers registered in the country. Includes both paying and non-paying passengers (airline employees, infants). Each passenger on a particular flight (with one flight number) is counted once. Passengers flying multiple legs (with different flight numbers) are counted multiple times. Based on airline passenger manifests and airport traffic data reported to national civil aviation authorities and compiled by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Why It Matters
Air passenger traffic is a key indicator of economic connectivity, tourism activity, and business integration. It reflects a country's integration into global networks, the strength of its tourism industry, and the mobility of its population. High passenger volumes indicate strong economic ties, tourism appeal, and business activity. Aviation connectivity enables trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange, making it critical for economic development.
Understanding the Values
Very Low: < 1 million passengers/year (limited connectivity - small or isolated economies) Low: 1-10 million (developing connectivity - regional hubs emerging) Moderate: 10-50 million (significant connectivity - established regional aviation) High: 50-200 million (major connectivity - large economies or tourism hubs) Very High: > 200 million (global hubs - US 1.05B, China 659M, UK 165M) Global total: ~4.5 billion passengers (pre-COVID 2019) Note: COVID-19 caused 60% drop in 2020; recovery ongoing through 2024-2025

Data Quality & Coverage
Coverage: ~180 countries Update frequency: Annual Source: World Bank WDI / ICAO Civil Aviation Statistics Limitations: Only captures registered carriers (excludes charter and cargo-only flights). Transfer passengers counted multiple times if changing flights. Does not distinguish between domestic and international travel. Small countries may have unreliable reporting. COVID-19 pandemic created major discontinuities in 2020-2022 data.
