How It's Calculated
Total freight (cargo and mail) carried by air multiplied by distance traveled, expressed in million ton-kilometers. One ton-kilometer equals one metric ton of freight transported one kilometer. Includes both domestic and international freight carried by registered air carriers. Freight counted includes cargo holds of passenger aircraft and dedicated cargo aircraft. Based on airline manifests and civil aviation authority data compiled by ICAO.
Why It Matters
Air freight is essential for high-value, time-sensitive goods (electronics, pharmaceuticals, perishables, documents). While only ~1% of global trade by weight, air cargo represents ~35% by value. Air freight volume reflects a country's participation in global value chains, manufacturing exports (especially high-tech), and logistics infrastructure quality. It enables just-in-time manufacturing, e-commerce, and rapid response to supply chain disruptions.
Understanding the Values
Very Low: < 100 million ton-km (minimal air cargo - limited manufacturing exports) Low: 100-1,000 million ton-km (developing air cargo - regional trade) Moderate: 1,000-10,000 million ton-km (significant air cargo - export economy) High: 10,000-50,000 million ton-km (major air cargo hub - advanced manufacturing) Very High: > 50,000 million ton-km (global cargo hub - Hong Kong 197,000M, US 182,000M) Global total: ~697 billion ton-km (2019) Top exporters: Electronics (30%), pharmaceuticals (15%), automotive parts (10%)

Data Quality & Coverage
Coverage: ~150 countries (smaller countries often not reported) Update frequency: Annual Source: World Bank WDI / ICAO Limitations: Does not include cargo on foreign carriers (only domestically registered). Mail often bundled with freight. Excludes express courier services not registered as airlines. COVID-19 reduced belly cargo (passenger aircraft holds) but increased dedicated freighters. Does not capture air cargo value or commodity mix.
